Health Screening: The sign up sheet is still in the lounge. Please note that if you did not get a chance to sign up, Dolora has designated a time slot for you. Please be sure to take a peak at the schedule before school on Monday to verify your time. The sign up sheet is still in the lounge. Screening locations: AM in Mrs. Hua's kinder classroom and afternoon in the library. The hearing testing will be in the computer lab all day.
6th Grade Walk-A-Thon: In case you haven't heard, the sixth graders will be having a Walk-A-Thon to raise money for sixth grade camp. 3rd grade teachers, if you could please ask your students to take a break from the mile club due to this event. Due to sheer numbers, we want to avoid anyone getting run over with already 120 sixth graders on the track. Thank you.
Wednesday Conferences: Miles and I will be in the building throughout conferencing this Wednesday. Please don't hesitate to let us know if you would like us to join you for a conference (please realize that there are only two of us and 34 classrooms so a heads up before to schedule you in will help. Mark Cooksley is also available. We also also appreciate that PTA will be providing some food in the evening so don't forget to come down to the staff room.
Mock Election at Carson
Committee Update from Lindsay & Miles
In observance of the Presidential election this year, Carson will participate in activities supportive of 2 key goals:
1. Students learning about the voting process and getting excited to participate in the events surrounding the actual election on Nov. 4th
2. Students passing the enthusiasm about voting on to their families and encouraging them to vote on Nov. 4th
A timeline was established in support of these goals. The sequence is outlined as follows based upon the recommendations of the Election Ad Hoc Committee.
1. Decorating the school. We thought to have decorations up the week before the election – some of these can be used for Veterans Day as well. Suggestion – have art docent teach patriotic art project before Election Day. Lindsay has patterns for art and ideas if you want. She has been doing this for a long time!!! Ha!
a. Kindergarten – suggestion to make Uncle Sam heads for the hall. Pre-schoolers maybe could make a hat or some red white and blue painting (potatoe stamps???)
b. Grades 1 and 2 make big Uncle Sam Figures
c. Grade 3 – patriotic woven hearts
d. Grade 4-6 – partiotic flags or portraits of candidates or VOTE signs for school.
2. Suggestion to teachers: use Auditor’s materials (coming mid-October) for Voting is Cool and teach lesson/lessons the week before the election.
3. Teachers have kids register for election in the week before. Modify for the younger students. (There will be lists for the kids to sign in before voting.)
4. PTA preps for voting day: Volunteers will begin decorating the front entry and setting up on the afternoon of Oct. 31st.
a. Todd will see if he can get pictures from the campaign headquarters to hang in entry for ballot casting.
b. Suggestion that we use entryway to set up tables on the day before the election with 6 stations per table to expedite voting.
c. Miles will print the class lists. PTA will help with election process and setting up tables and decorations. Suggestion was made that 2 classes could vote at the same time and that way all classes will make it timely.
5. Election will be held Nov. 3rd
a. Ballot will include only the 2 major candidates and a space for write-in. Simple – Lisa will design.
b. Wear Red, White, and Blue on Carson Elementary School Election Day (Monday, November 3rd)
c. Mr. G or Mr. E will announce the election results at the end of the day. Hourly updates will be on channel 74 throughout the day.
A copy of writing idea, Uncle Sam pattern will be placed in your boxes soon from Lindsay
This is an overview of the minutes of the committee. If you would like to offer some additional assistance in support of election day, please contact Lindsay and/or Miles. Refer parent volunteers to Amy Gerber, PTA President.
