CELEBRATIONS:
  • This week we celebrated the return of Danielle McGuire after her surgery and also are delighted in the good news Sally heard the other day showing her husband is clean from cancer. Thank you staff for the support and kindness expressed to all of our Coyote family as we continue to look after those facing ongoing and new challenges.
  • Hats off to our team of mentor teachers as they support our great new troop of energetic student teachers entering into their full time experience in charge of the classroom. I also wish to acknowledge their great guidance and assistance as they spend time researching and developing new interventions, helping colleagues in assessing students, and contributing to our LID and CT planning in support of our RTI model. Whatever happened to the days when having a student teacher meant hanging out in the staff lounge and making lots of runs to pick up coffee and donuts? Or maybe I just am missing something here? :)
  • Congrats to our Office Staff for completing the input of almost 900 enrollment forms in the new data system! What an achievement! Not only did new info need to be added or updated, but old data had to be separated and inserted into new, more detailed categories! So, next time you look up an address, phone number, or other data gem within eSchool Plus, you know who to thank!
  • Thanks to a generous donation from our Maplewood friends, we now have a wonderful laptop cart holding 16 of our laptops available for checkout from Amber. If you are interested in using the cart for a short time, stop by and see her and be sure to thank Amber for the great job she has done setting up the cart! Of course, we always want to return it in the same or better status than we received it.

BITS & PIECES

Friday Treat Sales
After considerable review and lots of input and special thanks to Kristen, we have a new Friday treats model that will begin on the 16th. 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students will purchase the treats in the lunchroom during lunch. Teachers will be able to closely monitor their purchases and it should eliminate excessive buying, trading, and loaning of items to others. Also, kids will now eat their lunches before getting their treats! Primary kids will be purchasing their treats during the second recess and whatever they don't finish at recess, they will load in their backpacks to take home for later consumption. Thank you Patricia Hood for working with us to make these changes and reduce the choices to beef sticks, two types of red vines, and, coming soon, popcorn!

Conferences
As you saw, the votes were cast and the decision was made to host night conferences on the 28th. Karen will be emailing you some grids for planning your conferences. Remember, your primary goal is to conference with the families of your neediest kiddos first, including those on SLPs. This will also include any students receiving LAP services, with more info on this coming on Thursday. Since we are not doing traditional conferencing where we try to set up conferences based on sibling or other family groupings as the priority, I still would encourage you to get together with colleagues that may have siblings within the building if it makes sense to do so. We can provide a few minutes on Wednesday afternoon to plan this out.

Kids in the Hall
Just a reminder that sending kids on a time out in the hall places them in an unsupervised situation. If a student is disrupting enough that he or she needs a time out, please try to arrange placement with a neighbor buddy class so that kids are not left to their own devices in the hall. Per state code, when a student is denied access to your classroom for more than the remainder of a lesson or half an hour or longer, this requires a re-entry conference with the student and documentation for loss of instructional time. If the student is in special ed, the consideration are even more stringent and can lead to legal challenges by parents. So, if a child needs a little space, please try to place them in an appropriate quieter spot in the classroom or use the buddy room. If it is a more extreme situation, an office visit is in order along with a written note for sending down the student. All office referrals should be followed up by phone calls home as well. Together we can keep the kids in class and redirect them back to being successful learners!
