Muffins with Mom Parking: Since we are anticipating a great turnout for this event, we want to be proactive with parking. Therefore, all staff should use the staff parking lot Monday morning-even if you don't park there. This means that we will be double parking to keep as many parking spaces open as possible. Also, if you are an early arriver type of person, we will be doing 'some' additional parking behind the school. Every space counts. We all, especially working moms, appreciate your cooperation for Monday.

Mercer Girls Assembly: Due to the 5th Avenue having to make a date change and adjustments in their schedule, we are needing to play the hand that we have been dealt for when the troupe will be here. Thank you in advance for your support. This is what we have:
  • 12:45 pm Grades 4, 5, 6
  • 1:45 pm Grades K, 1, 2, 3
Grades 3 & 6 will need to eat in their classrooms to allow Melissa time to clean the floor of the commons.

6th grade recess will be shortened. Playground supervisors and principals will bring students in from recess and monitor until 1:00 pm. Teachers will then join the assembly by 1:00 pm.

Grades 1, 2, & 3 will miss afternoon recess to attend the assembly. Playground supervisors and principals will monitor students during that half hour to assure that primary teachers have their recess break. Teachers will then join the assembly by 2:30 pm. Please see Miles or Arturo if there are any questions or if clarification is needed.

LIC Wednesday: Our agenda (45 min. to 1 hour) includes info on creating classroom assignments for next year, follow up questions/corrections to our CSIP survey, a start on closing procedures info. For the remainder of the time we will be working in teams.

Olweus Topic of the Week: Living a healthy life. What are things you are doing to take care of yourself each day? How does nutrition, sleep, and exercise fit into your life? What do you recommend to make sure your mind and body are ready to SUCCEED EVERY DAY?

Special Olympics Fundraiser: Don't forget that our last non-profit fundraiser begins this week. We are excited about all the participation by our staff. Thank you for your willingness to support this cause by being at the event or even camping out!

Smarties on the Playground: Playground staff was sharing that kids are bringing from the classrooms the Smarties candies, stepping on them and then after putting the crushed candy in their mouth pretending to be smoking. Please take some time on Monday to talk about the lack of glamour that comes with smoking as well as the fact that we should not be taking things to eat outside.

National Board "Hop Start" Meeting May 29th: This is an important meeting for all PSD staff who are planning on going for their National Board Certification during the 2009-10 school year. We will meet in the Ballou Library from 4-5:30 pm and talk about how the cohorts will be organized and what you can do during the summer months to get yourself prepared for September and beyond. Please email Gaye Lantz and let her know you are coming. The cohorts will be organized based on the number of staff who attend May 29th and there will be limited space available for staff who might decide to join after this May meeting. Give Gaye a call at X8811 or email her if you have questions.

Seattle Cultural Event: May 9, 2009, 12 noon – 8pm : Spirit of West AfricaSeattle Center - Center House, FREE Watch while the traditions of six West African countries come to life through exhibits, live music, dance performances and storytelling. Promotion/Retention Policy No. 2421 Instruction

PROMOTION/RETENTION
The Board recognizes that the rate of physical, social, emotional and academic growth will vary
among individual students. Since students grow at their own rate, these individual growth
characteristics shall be recognized in classroom programming.
When students have successfully completed a year of study at a specific grade level, they will be
promoted to the next grade. Retention at the same grade may be considered when a student is not demonstrating minimum competency in grade level standards.
If retention is being considered, parent notification will be given at least 1 quarter in advance of
the end of the year.
