Olweus Topic of the Week: Time to do a status check on the rules. I am impressed on how many kids have the four anti-bully/harassment rules memorized! Now is a good time to think about each of the 4 rules and discuss what they actually mean. What are the students doing to help support the rules? What areas do they still need to work on? One thing that is still a big deal is that many kids still do not report when something bad is happening, either to themselves or another student. Why is reporting so important?
Parent Requests for Retention: We are beginning to hear from parents who are considering/requesting that their child be retained. Please keep in mind that these reqeusts are referred to the SRC (Debby) if the student is on an IEP, or S/TAT (Mark) if it is a non IEP student. The recommendation to support the request is made by the team rather than the individual teacher. Teachers who are considering the option of retention of a student also make the referral to the S/TAT team before there is a conversation with the parent.
Staff Art for Display: A friendly reminder that Darla is anticipating collecting the staff art pieces on Thursday in preparation for the Friday Art Show. Please connect with her if you have questions. Students always get excited to see staff masterpieces-let's not let your fans down!
Staff Talent: FYI--Don't forget to pencil in that the staff portion for talent show participation is on May 21st after school. More info from Mr. Todd to come.
Star Trek Movie Night: For all of you excited fellow Trekkies...we are planning a staff night-with spouses and significant others- at the movies for the approx. 10 pm showing on Friday night. Can you think of a more exciting way to end end the week and jump into the weekend? I didn't think so!!!! If you are going to join us, please connect with Miles by Tuesday so we can preorder some tickets! They are $10 each and will be going fast....
Pandemic Situations and Swine Flu: ESC has begun to send out formal communications to parents and is meeting on a daily basis to assure that they have the latest information. As a school we need to take all concerns seriously, but at the same time we must keep doing the business of educating. It is understandable that some families will choose to keep their children home out of fear. While this is a natural reaction, based on the current information it is not necessary to do so at this time. We as a school would react appropriately if there is a verified case. If a parent does choose to keep their child home then the regular procedures will kick-in. If they are sick they should be home. However, if a parent is simply keeping their children home, we have been directed as a school to follow through with normal procedures under regular circumstances (Doctors notes for after three days, BECCA, etc.). Please don't hesitate to refer parents to the office if they have questions or concerns.
Did you know...
...that over $250,000 each year from our instructional materials budget is going to the replacement of lost or damaged books. Please keep in mind that we wil inventory it all this year as part of closing procedures. If you have questions, it would be advantageous to ask colleagues or the office now rather than later.
A few highlights on how K-12 Education fared through HB 1244 (2009-2011 State Operating Budget):
--- K-12 Ed will receive 13.4 billion dollars. This is a reduction of 1.5 billion dollars, and yes, this does include Federal Stimulus.
--- 3.6% COLA (I 732) suspended for biennium
--- Student Achievement Program (I 728) reduced by 600 million. Federal stimulus will restore SOME of that but cuts are still 71-78%
--- Levy Equalization dollars reduced by 15%
--- Math and Science Pro Dev discontinued saving/cutting 40 million dollars
--- ONE of the 2 LID (days) cut.
--- K-4 Enhancement REMAINS FULLY FUNDED. However, we are still evaluating the K-4 compliance requirements.
--- The levy lid raised by 4% with a cap of 35%. This means districts can achieve additional funding through local revenue IF they can pass their levies. This will be a topic for consideration by our board in the near future.
