September 14-18, 2009

Another great week! I can't believe how fast this month is flying by!
I hope everyone is feeling settled in to the year and has been able to get to know one another a bit better as we get down to the business of making a difference...every day!
A couple of things to celebrate:
  1. We are proud to be adding a 6th Kindergarten session to accommodate for the large numbers in our current 5 classes. On top of that, our own Lisa Reeves will now be able to be full time here starting next Thursday! Please pass on your congrats to Lisa!
  2. Erling and I had the opportunity to check out the new and improved SARGS data system today. There are fabulous improvements and it is easier to use and much more intuitive than the previous version! Also, the old data system affectionately known as PADS is now retired and fully incorporated and enhanced within SARGS. Bring on the data reports, because they are live and at your fingertips. We will have full staff training on our October 8th LID day thanks to our own Crystal Widmann!
  3. Another great week and only one discipline referral! I am very proud of how well you all have been working to help kids continue their good choices marked by our Olweus Anti-Bullying and Anti-Harassment program. Keep your eyes focused for an upcoming training on Olweus to be determined soon!
  4. Thanks for the great work on our teaming and collaboration efforts this week. The team norms, SMART goals, and agenda plans are looking terrific! Don't forget to let Karen know when your team meetings are scheduled for Tuesdays!
  5. Finally, our classroom lines have never been better! KUDOS to you all for helping make every classroom a role model class! The compliments keep rolling in and you ALL deserve the credit. Please pass this on to your students with my sincerest compliments!

Memo from Pierce County Sheriff Deputy (SRO Officer) Regarding CONFISCATION

Confiscation of property by school official

It has recently come to the attention of the Pierce County Sheriff Department that the Puyallup School District does not appear to have a policy in place that directs the Security, Administrators and other district employees in the handling of confiscated property. In an effort to work with the Puyallup School district the Pierce Co. Sheriff’s department has identified different types of property seizure situations and recommends specific methods for handling, logging, recording and storing of these properties. Below you will find categories of property and procedures for seizing these properties.

1. Illegal items such as but not limited to:

1. Any firearm;

2. Any other dangerous weapon as defined in RCW 9.41.250;

3. Any device commonly known as "nun-chu-ka sticks", consisting of two or more lengths of wood, metal, plastic, or similar substance connected with wire, rope, or other means;

4. Any device, commonly known as "throwing stars", which are multi-pointed, metal objects designed to embed upon impact from any aspect; or

5. Any air gun, including any air pistol or air rifle, designed to propel a BB, pellet, or other projectile by the discharge of compressed air, carbon dioxide, or other gas.

If a student is found to be in possession of a dangerous weapon as defined by RCW 9.41.280 or another illegal item (ie. alcoholic beverages,

marijuana, hallucinogens, amphetamines, inhalants (“huffing”), barbiturates,

narcotics (opiates or synthetic narcotics), cocaine, legend drugs, any

dangerous or controlled substances, non-prescription and/or over-the counter

medications such as, but not limited to, diet pills, caffeine

pills/supplements, pain killers, cold medicines and herbal supplements

(unless such possession or use is permitted by the school nurse or a

physician), or any “look-alike” substances purported to be any of the

above.):

The School Administrator or his/her designee should immediately notify the SRO. The SRO will respond and take possession of the illegal item, write a report and place the item(s) into property at a secure location.

2. Items in violation of school policies/rules:

1. Pocket knives of any size

2. Cigarettes and other tobacco products (under age 18, this is class 3 civil infraction RCW 70.155.080)

3. Lighters

4. Cellular phones, pagers

5. head phones, i-pods and other electronic devices

If a student is found to be in possession of an item that is not allowed by school policy and The School Administrator or his/her designee decides to confiscate the item:

The school administrator or his/her designee should either return the item to the student at the end of the day or contact the student’s parent to respond to the school to take custody of the item. Please keep these items in a secure location until turned over to a parent/guardian. It may be considered unsafe to discard certain items in the trash on school grounds.

Feel free to contact me anytime with questions.

Thanks,

Jeff
