Classified Staff Week: Carson is celebrating Classified Week this week. Thank you to our many wonderful shining starts who work with us at Carson. They are making a difference for our kids' school experience and making Carson a better place to be
Change for Africa: Our change for Africa fundraiser continues. This is the second week and unfortunately, we don't have a lot of coin to contribute to the cause. We encourage you to come up with some creative ideas in your classroom to get more silver thrown into the well. Sonja did a great job of putting together some pictures that are displayed by the well. If you look closely at the pictures you will see a large black barrel-that is where water is currently being stored.
ELL Teacher: There has been a mid-year shuffle in ELL personnel that has resulted in Mrs. Conkle providing support to our junior high level students. Please welcome David Gordon to Carson. David has been a sub in the building and was here on Thursday and Friday of this last week. Rhonda and Cassie also continue at Carson.
Electronic Devices: We seem to have had an increase in the amount of electronic devices that are coming to Carson. Even though they are not allowed on school grounds, I realize that some students are bringing them due to also heading other than home after school. One thing that we can control is how we respond to this. The expectations are that they stay in their backpacks on school grounds (this includes before and after school/in the building and anywhere outside on the grounds). Please do not permit students to bring or use electronic equipment as a reward, celebration, etc. at school-it simply undermines our effort to avoid such equipment from coming to school in the first place and gives students and parents mixed messages. Don't hesitate to see either Miles or myself if you have questions.
Olweus Topic of the Week: Last weekend many of you received an anonymous email from a student needing help with bullying and harassment issues. Do know that we responded to this right away and have provided intervention to this student. There are a few concerns with this email and many staff have either stopped by and emailed with similar conversation.
  1. The student obviously is requesting help, but by not sharing situations as they happen, it makes it very difficult for us to respond in a timely manner. Refer to our 4th Olweus rule about reporting. Even if it is not happening to an individual but you know it is going on, it should be reported.
  2. By emailing the concern rather than sharing, the student made it difficult to respond for assistance. Thanks to Rachel, we were able to do the necessary sleuthing to pinpoint the student and provide him with support.
  3. We don't want to encourage this type of cry for assistance. It sensationalizes issues when the reality is that only a few kids were or may be involved.
  4. We respond quickly to assistance. Mr. Cooksley has trained the student on the use of his Yellow light and Red light notes, students are trained to report bus issues to bus drivers, playground issues to playground supervisors, classroom issues to teachers, and so on. In other words, reporting is encouraged to be REAL TIME so that it can be handled promptly and not lead to these overt cries for help.
  5. We keep parents in the loop. This student had not shared with his family and as soon as we were able to assist him at school, we brought the family on board as well.
The bottom line. The student is greatly concerned about 3 issues. Clicks forming in the early grades that leave kids feeling alone or left out. Students using profanity on the playground. Kids teasing others for their own entertainment. All of these have been addressed with him, his teacher, and his family. Please make your Olweus meeting focus this week on REPORTING and KEEPING THE BAR FOR RESPECT HIGH AT CARSON. If you have further questions about this, please see Arturo or me about this. Let's help our Coyotes...Succeed Every Day!

Green in the Gym: In an effort to support a greener school, we will have two containers in the cafeteria starting this week for cartons and aluminum cans. Please share this with your students before coming down to lunch...let's recycle all we can!
